Resins & binders

Alkyd resins

Polyester binders for solvent-borne paints, varnishes and enamels — classified by oil length.

Alkyd resins are synthetic polyester binders produced by reacting polyols, polybasic acids and oils. They remain the workhorse of solvent-borne decorative and protective paints, prized for durability, adhesion and easy brushability. Grades are selected mainly by oil length — the share of oil or fatty acid in the resin.

Types & classifications

Short-oil alkyds (<40% oil)

Fast-drying, hard and glossy — used in industrial baking enamels, automotive finishes and wood lacquers.

Medium-oil alkyds (40–60% oil)

A balanced choice with good flexibility, adhesion and drying speed for general-purpose enamels and furniture finishes.

Long-oil alkyds (>60% oil)

Highly flexible with excellent exterior durability and brushability — for decorative paints, marine enamels and wood stains.

Modified & waterborne alkyds

Urethane-, silicone- or acrylic-modified backbones and low-VOC waterborne grades for enhanced UV, chemical or cure performance.
